Welcome to Ichigeki Karate
Welcome to the Ichigeki Karate Dojo. We are pleased that you have joined us and we will endeavor to make your study of the martial arts as beneficial as it has been for us. The style that is taught at Ichigeki is Shotokan Karate. Shotokan is a traditional Japanese Karate style, and you will be learning the traditions as well as the art. Shotokan Karate has a long history and is the first karate system brought to the Japanese mainland by Master Funakoshi from Okinawa.Karate is about respect, confidence, control of oneself, and humility. The goals that students achieve are on their own accord, which develops confidence and self-respect. Self-esteem is achieved by feeling good about these accomplishments. Students are encouraged to do their best every step of the way. They will be participating in a stimulating environment.
By taking Karate, one will learn trust, confidence, a dont quit attitude, a sense of belonging, and belief in one another. One of our school's codes is: "I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile", which we strongly emphasize and highly encourage. Many of the physical benefits of training in Karate includes improved balance, flexibility, stamina, and posture. Weight loss is promoted through extended cardiovascular activity. Studies have stated that, on average, those who practiced martial arts had 12% less body fat than those who had no training. The practitioners also showed greater flexibility and twice the balancing power compared to inactive groups.
Karate is a safe and effective way to protect against disease and reduce the negative effects of aging, and overall, can bring about positive physical and psychological changes. Adults benefit greatly from training. The physical conditioning alone counteracts physical deterioration, increases flexibility, relieves stress, and helps counter weight problems. All vital muscle groups are strengthened and toned. Realistic, practical self-defense is a major part of our training.
Shotokan Karate is a martial art, however it also instills peace, confidence, and the desire to stay clear of confrontations. It makes an individual stronger, and by having more internal confidence and being stronger, it will allow you to serve Christ, humanity and help other people in many more ways. Our school name, "Ichigeki", is a Japanese word that means literally “One Strike” (Ichi (one) Geki (strike)). It comes from the Samurai tradition of using one strike with the sword to end a duel. We interpret the word now in modern times to mean that you only need one strike, or one yell, or one push, or one kick - to get you out of harm's way.
